If you have ever wondered why one graphic tee feels rubbery and cracks after a few washes while another stays crisp for years, the answer usually comes down to the printing technique used. Understanding the three most common methods — screen printing, direct-to-garment (DTG), and sublimation — helps you make smarter choices whether you are buying a shirt or having one made.
Screen Printing: The Industry Classic
Screen printing is the oldest and most widely used method for producing t-shirts at scale. It works by pushing ink through a fine mesh stencil, one colour layer at a time, directly onto the fabric. Each colour in a design needs its own screen, which is why screen printing is most cost-effective for simple designs with a small number of solid colours.
The biggest advantage of screen printing is durability. Because the ink sits on top of the fibres and is cured with heat, it bonds strongly to the fabric and can withstand dozens of wash cycles without significant fading. It also produces bold, vibrant colours, especially on dark fabric, since the ink layer is opaque enough to cover the base colour of the shirt.
The trade-off is set-up cost and time. Because each colour requires a separate screen, screen printing only makes financial sense for bulk orders — think dozens or hundreds of identical shirts. It is not practical for one-off or highly detailed, photorealistic designs, and gradients or complex shading are difficult to reproduce accurately.
Direct-to-Garment (DTG): Detail Without the Minimums
DTG printing works more like an inkjet printer for fabric. A specialised printer applies water-based ink directly onto the shirt, building up the design pixel by pixel. This makes it possible to reproduce full-colour photographs, gradients, and intricate artwork with no extra cost per colour — something screen printing simply cannot do economically.
DTG is the backbone of most print-on-demand businesses, because it allows a single shirt to be printed on demand without needing to hold inventory or produce large batches. If you have ever ordered a custom t-shirt with a unique design made just for you, there is a good chance it was printed using DTG.
The downside is that DTG prints, while soft to the touch, tend to fade faster than screen prints over time, particularly on garments that are washed frequently in hot water or tumble dried on high heat. DTG also performs best on 100% cotton fabric — blends can cause the ink to sit unevenly.
Sublimation: Vivid, All-Over Designs
Sublimation uses heat to turn special dye into a gas that permanently bonds with polyester fibres. Unlike screen printing or DTG, which sit on top of the fabric, sublimation ink actually becomes part of the fibre itself. This means the print never cracks, peels, or fades from wear, because there is no physical layer to wear away.
Sublimation is ideal for all-over prints, bold patterns, and vibrant colour work that stretches from seam to seam. It is a favourite for sportswear and statement pieces where the entire garment is part of the design rather than just a central graphic.
The catch is that sublimation only works properly on polyester or polyester-blend fabric with a high synthetic content, and it performs poorly — or not at all — on 100% cotton. It also tends to work best on white or light-coloured garments, since the dye is transparent and needs a light base to show true colour.
Which Method Should You Look For?
If you are shopping for a shirt with a bold, simple graphic that needs to last years of regular wear, a screen-printed cotton tee is usually your best bet. If you want a unique, detailed, or photo-based design without committing to a bulk order, DTG print-on-demand is the more practical choice. And if you are after an all-over pattern with maximum colour vibrancy on a performance-style fabric, sublimation is worth seeking out.
